Who We Are & Our Story
My Story
Restoration Hall was not created from theory—it was born from personal experience, family loyalty, and a deep commitment to those who have served our country.
My younger brother, Phillip “Phill,” and I grew up inseparable. We were more than brothers—we were best friends. If you saw Phill, you saw Leonard. We shared childhood dreams, family bonds, and made a promise to always look out for one another.
After high school, Phill answered the call to serve and enlisted in the United States Army. He served during Desert Storm and returned home a changed man. Like many veterans, he carried burdens that were not always visible to others. Over time, injuries connected to his military service, personal hardships, and addiction created years of instability in his life.
When Phill later became homeless, I welcomed him into my home. I searched tirelessly for help—housing, treatment programs, employment opportunities, and any support that could give him a path forward. Eventually, he was accepted into a veterans program through the VA in Rhode Island. Though I called him daily, I knew he was still struggling.
Then came the phone call no brother ever wants to receive.
Phill passed away in his sleep, leaving behind children, grandchildren, and a family that loved him deeply. I brought him home, laid him to rest, and carried with me one question:
What kind of place could have changed his outcome?
That question became the foundation of Restoration Hall.
Today, Restoration Hall exists to ensure that veterans and vulnerable individuals do not face homelessness, hopelessness, or hardship alone. We are building more than shelter—we are building opportunity, dignity, healing, and a pathway forward.
Our vision is simple:
Transitional housing for veterans in crisis
Workforce development and career pathways
Childcare and family stabilization services
Health, wellness, and recovery support
Community partnerships that restore lives
Every room we renovate, every bed we prepare, and every life we help rebuild carries a piece of Phill’s legacy.
Restoration Hall stands for every veteran who came home carrying more than anyone could see.
Opening Doors. Restoring Hope. Rebuilding Lives.
In 2022, the vision became formalized with 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, opening doors to greater resources and partnerships. By 2023, the mission carried us to Ohio, where we saw with clear eyes what was missing: support for a new generation of veterans — younger, eager, but facing challenges unique to today’s world.
Today, Restoration Hall is more than a nonprofit. It is a movement — a bridge between service and civilian life, a family of advocates, and a promise that no veteran walks alone. From our roots in New Jersey to our new home in Ohio, our story is still being written — with every veteran we serve, every family we support, and every community we restore.
The vision for Restoration Hall was inspired by the belief that true restoration is holistic — addressing shelter, purpose, and the environment together. While this framework is rooted in values of service, dignity, and renewal, Restoration Hall serves all people regardless of background, belief, or circumstance.
Our Philosophy
At Restoration Hall, we believe that lasting transformation happens when people are supported as whole individuals — not just housed, not just trained, and not just relocated, but fully restored.
Our work is grounded in a simple yet powerful understanding: stability, purpose, and healthy environments must work together to create meaningful and sustainable change. When one is missing, progress is fragile. When all three are present, restoration becomes possible.
Our Three Pillars of Restoration
Housing Stability
Safe, stable housing is the foundation of dignity and recovery. Restoration Hall prioritizes housing as the starting point — providing individuals with the security and consistency needed to begin rebuilding their lives. Stability creates space for healing, growth, and forward movement.
Workforce Development & Purpose
Employment is more than income — it is identity, routine, and independence. Through workforce training, education, and skill development, Restoration Hall helps individuals reconnect with purpose and opportunity. Meaningful work empowers people to move from survival to self-sufficiency.
Environmental Renewal & Healthy Spaces
Communities cannot thrive in unsafe or neglected environments. Restoration Hall is committed to restoring the physical spaces where services are delivered — addressing environmental hazards, improving energy efficiency, and transforming distressed properties into healthy, welcoming places of opportunity.
One Integrated Model
These three pillars are intentionally interconnected. Housing supports workforce participation. Workforce success sustains housing stability. Environmental renewal makes both possible. Together, they form a unified system of restoration — each essential, none complete on its own.
While our philosophy is inspired by values of service, dignity, and renewal, Restoration Hall serves all individuals regardless of background, belief, or circumstance. Our commitment is to people, community, and long-term impact.
At Restoration Hall, restoration is not a single service — it is a coordinated pathway toward stability, independence, and hope.
